Introduction

As you walk along the lovely wooded trails within the Kennebec Messalonskee trail system what catches your interest?  Trees and plants? Birds, mammals, and signs they leave?   How about  what’s under your feet? Believe it or not, the rocks and soil that make up the trails have stories to tell!

There are several places along KMT’s 40 miles of trails where you can get a good look at some of Maine’s complex geology in the form of bedrock outcrops (commonly called ledge) and surface deposits ( like sand dunes) 

You will find the following Geologic sites are marked on the KMT Trail System Map
